Character Name: Edwina Amir
Preferred Character House: Slytherin
Character Age: 17
Character Background/History: Edwina was born to Cassius and Antigone Amir. Her father died when Edwina was two, through unknown causes. All of the inheritence was left to Antigone to separate among their three children--Anastasia, Preston and Edwina. Antigone, however, did not follow these wishes, but held the inheritence, only allowing the children to see any of it if they obeyed her without question. Anastasia and Preston grew to never doubt or bicker with their mother, but Edwina, as the youngest often does, began to question her mother's actions. Fights became commonplace, her siblings often bitter toward her, blaming her for her mother's worsening ill moods and punishments, and making her out to be cruel and selfish. It wasn't long until Edwina had completely given in to the accusations and simply learned to shrug off things like guilt or remorse as means of self-preservation.
Knowing very little of her father, and wanting connection, Edwina gravitated more toward her surviving Amir relatives; her grandparents constantly used praise and rewards that had been neglected by her mother as a means to open Edwina's mind to the long-time elitist views the family had held, and the lifestyle surrounded by dark arts that her mother had long since prohibited in her house. Edwina, in her usual impetuous nature, began to believe nearly everything her grandparents told her with the theory that their ways were kinder and earned more affection than the ways of her mother. She was rather fond of most of her cousins, but particularly Jared Amir, who was quite bright and treated Edwina as a young charge, trying (and failing) to teach her all about potions and herbology, and eventually teaching her some of her first curses. His younger brother, Mason, always seemed critical of the girl's moody and emotional behaviours. Both boys and their grandparents have the habit of referring to the girl as 'Sekhmet' when she's particularly moody.
Edwina's mother continued to try to make her compliant and obedient, only adding to Edwina's hatred for anything that reminded her of her mother, and her numbness to mental and emotional punishment. Finally under the threat of not being allowed to attend Hogwarts, Edwina spent a year bending to her mother's will, learning how to speak elequently and how to give the illusion of a pleasant attitude, putting others' problems before her own, and seeming approachable. When she boarded the train from King's Cross Station, the first thing she did after locking herself in her own cubicle was let out a string of long, unladylike swears, feeling a rush at doing something her mother would never approve of and not being reprimanded or hurt. The feeling was addictive to the girl, and now Edwina sometimes goes out of her way to act 'inappropriately', be it gambling for extra spending money to use on questionable items, being overly flirtatious (more exciting for her if the target already has a girlfriend), or attempting to bully a lower year into doing homework for her.
She wasn't surprised when she wasn't sorted into Ravenclaw (her mother had long convinced her she was nowhere near as intelligent as her sister and brother) but WAS rather surprised that she was sorted into Slytherin instead of Gryffindor, the only other house her family had ever described with detail. All she knew about Slytherin was that it was supposedly the place for what her siblings had haughtily described as the 'dregs of the wizarding society'. Upon spending a night talking to some of her housemates, she was very relieved to find that her siblings had been blindly stupid, and that Slytherin was actually inhabited by children of some of the most high-classed, socially elite families.
For the longest time, Edwina refused to mention anything pertaining to her mother or siblings whenever family matters were inquired upon, instead speaking of her grandparents and cousins. After a year or two, tidbits of information on her immediate family began to slip, mostly through disgusted comparison of another's actions. She gets along better with those who pay positive attention to her, and she has developed an intricate facade in order to win others' affection.
